The Beginning of NASCAR Road Course Racing

Dan Gurney and the Wood Brothers Racing team were a dominant force of NASCAR racing back in the 1960s. Gurney was a Californian superstar in auto racing who participated in F1, IndyCar, and NASCAR. He finished runner-up twice in the Indy 500 and won 5 NASCAR races; all coming on the Riverside Road Course.

Wood Brothers Racing fielded the #121 Ford for Gurney in 1963 - 1967. His force with the Wood Brothers were so dominant that he won 4 straight races at Riverside. He lapped the field in the 1968 event when he won a 5th Riverside race. NASCAR, after that dominating performance, ordered him to find a different team, and changed the rules for race car drivers who were unbeatable.
